Professor Patrick Chung graduated from The University of Hong Kong in 2004 and completed his surgical training at the Department of Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital. He obtained his Fellowship qualification in 2011 and earned the Master of Surgery (HKU) in 2017. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor and Assistant Dean (Alumni Engagement) at LKS Faculty of Medicine in The University of Hong Kong.
Professor Chung focuses his clinical expertise and research on paediatric hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases. He has authored 3 book chapters and published 135 articles in top-tier journals, including The Lancet, The Journal of Hepatology, and The Journal of Paediatric Surgery. In 2016, he conducted the first regional multi-center study in paediatric surgery, earning him the Best Original Paper Award from the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. Professor Chung is appointed to the editorial boards of several international journals and has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Paediatric Surgery Open since 2021. He is the principal investigator/co-principal investigator of multiple RGC-GRF and HMRF-funded projects, securing over HKD 5.4 million in total funding. Besides, he is a co-investigator of a 5-year Theme-Based Research Scheme project focused on translational research in biliary atresia, with funding exceeding HKD 56 million. Internationally, Professor Chung collaborates closely with renowned centres and holds board memberships in various international associations, including the Pacific Association of Paediatric Surgeons and the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgery. He has presented over 70 abstracts and delivered more than 40 invited lectures worldwide. Professor Chung is also the supervisor/mentor post-graduate students at HKU and has been honored with 2 prestigious surgical awards: the GB Ong Travelling Fellowship in 2018 and the American College of Surgeons Carlos Pellegrini Traveling Fellowship in 2019.
As a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery, Professor Chung is highly experienced in laparoscopic neonatal surgery and performed the first paediatric laparoscopic liver resection in Hong Kong. In 2023, his team received the Outstanding Team Award from the Hospital Authority. Beyond clinical work, Professor Chung is deeply committed to medical education. His excellence in teaching was recognized with the Faculty Teaching Medal in 2023. He is also an accredited trainer and examiner for the Paediatric Surgery Board in Hong Kong.
Professor Chung currently holds several leadership roles, including Deputy Chief in Paediatric Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital, Person-in-Charge of Surgical Oncology Service at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, Council Member and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, Vice President of the Hong Kong Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and Secretary General of the Asian Surgical Association.
