Professor Michael Co is a specialist in General Surgery with a focus on Breast Surgery. He has rich experience in investigating on advanced breast surgical techniques. He is the pioneer of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound for fibroadenoma treatment in Hong Kong. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on ablative surgical treatments for benign and malignant breast cancers and completed a Health and Medical Research Funded project from the HKSAR Government for the study on cryosurgery for breast cancers. His academic excellence has been acknowledged through prestigious accolades, including the Korean Breast Cancer Foundation Scholarship for his impactful breast cancer research.

Beyond his clinical and research achievements, Professor Co is visionary in medical education. In 2021, he revolutionized clinical teaching by developing a generative artificial intelligence chatbot for bedside education and pioneered virtual bedside teaching. In September 2022, he co-hosted the world’s first cross-territorial virtual bedside teaching session with the National University of Singapore, where he also serves as an Honorary Visiting Fellow. His ground-breaking educational initiatives have been featured in prominent local and international media outlets, including RTHK and BBC World Service Global News Podcast.

Professor Co’s dedication to teaching excellence earned him the HKU Faculty Teaching Medal in 2021. In 2023, his contributions were further recognized with his election as a Member of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, American College of Surgeons, a testament to his global influence in surgical education.

Currently, Professor Co is Director of the MBBS Programme (Assessment) at the School of Clinical Medicine at The University of Hong Kong. His leadership extends to key roles in professional organizations, including Council Member of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, Advisory Group Member for the HKSAR Government’s Breast Cancer Screening Pilot Program, and Chairperson of the Internship Subcommittee of the Licentiate Committee, Medical Council of Hong Kong.
